Whenever we talk to Canadian youth about doing a STEM project, their excitement and passion shines. They are excited to share what they learned, the skills they developed, and how they accomplished more than they thought possible. But don’t just take our word for it! Here is what they have to say when we asked them about what they would say to fellow students:
Why should you do a STEM project?
“STEM is for everybody. There is always a problem that needs to be solved in our society. My biggest piece of advice would be to find an issue that you are passionate about, that way it keeps you motivated to learn more and solve the problem.”
“DO IT, IT’S FUN! Just try, find something you like but don’t understand…and start asking questions!”
“Go for it! Whether you’re solving a big problem or exploring something small that fascinates you, STEM projects are an incredible way to turn curiosity into impact. Don’t worry about being perfect, focus on learning, experimenting, and growing. [And if you want to take your project further] STEM fairs are more than competitions; they’re communities of support, creativity, and inspiration. You’ll gain skills, meet new people, and most importantly, discover what you are capable of.”
“It is a great experience that you will learn a lot from. Don’t be afraid to try an idea and switch to a different one if the first doesn’t work out.”
“Select a subject that genuinely interests you. Passion will drive your research and make the process enjoyable and rewarding.”
“Do it!! Because you never know where it can take you. You can gain so many valuable experiences through doing a STEM project. The self-growth is really special and you will learn so many things about yourself along your journey.”
“Everyone starts somewhere and your interest is the very beginning of an incredible journey. So acknowledge that curiosity, ask every question; the whys, whats and hows. And know that in STEM you never stop learning, take it day by day and nurture it. Our timeline will never not have enough space for great, innovative and curious minds like yours.”
“Go for it! One of the most daunting things about doing a project is choosing a topic; but follow your passions, and you will find something fascinating to explore.”
“Do what you love most, and never give up, especially when your goal feels unachievable, for this is the moment we learn the most valuable lessons…you can try and fail, but not fail to try.”
“Just do it! It has changed my life for the better and I am forever grateful for the experiences and friends I made a long the way. »
“DO IT!!!!! STEM can teach you so much. The learning and the experience is what counts…don’t get discouraged. Try again. And again. And again. When you think you’re finished, tell yourself, “What could make it even better?” This will make you really think about your project, and will help you to develop a deeper understanding of your subject.”
“Do something that interests you. Don’t try to fit into people’s expectations of what a STEM project should be about.”
“I think anyone who is interested in doing a STEM project should 100% go for it. I took a leap out of my comfort zone…and it was an amazing experience! I’m so glad I did it!”
